Made by PhotoTherapeutics, Inc the Omnilux light therapy devices use LED (or light emitting diodes) to treat and destroy the bacteria that cause acne. Known as Propionibacterium acnes or p.acnes this bacterium infects the pores of the skin, increasing the production of oil or sebum by the sebaceous glands. The Omnilux light systems can be used for moderate to severe inflammatory acne. Their single wavelengths of intense light will not only kill the p.acnes bacteria but will decrease or eliminate the redness and inflammation of the skin, effects that were caused from the blocked pores.
Omnilux light therapy can use blue or red light wavelengths to treat mild to severe cystic acne with minimal side effects. The blue light works on mild to moderate acne passing into the skin as a heat source and destroying the acne causing bacteria in the pores. The light activates the natural chemical process in the acne bacteria, playing on its photosensitivity. The reaction causes the pH levels within the cells to change and the bacteria to destroy itself.
Red light therapy works in the same manner as the blue light however the red version utilizes a higher wavelength, penetrating deeper into the dermis as it heats and kills the bacteria. Red light Omnilux therapy is used for moderate to severe acne or cystic acne. Once the bacteria are destroyed, the skin can then return to normal balance.
