P. acne or Propionibacterium acnes are the bacteria that cause acne. Acne that has been resistant to more conventional methods of treatment, such as prescription medications both topical and systemic, now has a new weapon. It is the use of blue light therapy for mild to moderate acne. Blue light therapy was FDA approved in August of 2002. The blue light goes into the acne and obliterates the bacteria that cause it.
These safe non invasive light therapies use the blue light to target and obliterate p.acnes that form in the sebaceous glands. Treatments are reported quick and painless and can take up to 30 minutes to complete. Most moderate inflammatory acne can be cleared in as little as 8 treatments. Omnilux blue can be used alone or in combination with Levulan, the topical medication.
Side effects of the blue light therapy include swelling, redness, stinging and a burning sensation for up to a few days after the procedure. Costs can range from $50-$150 per session. |
