Clogged or plugged pores, pimples or cysts are what are commonly known as acne. Millions of people from teenagers to adults are afflicted with this skin disorder. Acne is not a curable disease, but a controllable one. Fortunately almost every case of acne can be controlled or resolved. However there are a few things to remember during interventions for acne. The most important being; clearing up acne takes time. On average 6-8 weeks are needed for even simple treatments of moderate to severe cases.
There are many treatments to control acne and to reduce the subsequent scarring that can occur from it. While there are several methods available to treat all levels of acne, it is wise to remember that the treatments that work for some do not work for all. Mild to moderate acne can often be controlled with a simple cleaning routine. Keeping the skin clear and pores unclogged may be all that is needed to keep break outs under control. Non prescription or over the counter medications with the ingredients containing salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide can dry up the oils that can lead to the clogged pores.
Moderate to severe cases of acne and those unresponsive to over the counter methods, may require a consultation with a dermatologist or physician. Prescription strength medications are available through injection (intralesional corticosteroids), oral antibiotics or hormones and topical antimicrobials or retinoids. Often combination therapy of both topical and oral medication is prescribed and can be most effective.
Ablative and non ablative laser treatments as well as some chemical peels and microdermabrasion can also be effective in controlling some forms of acne. The import point to remember with acne treatments is that once the acne is controlled, maintenance is needed to maximize effectiveness and prevent scarring. |
